PONY CLUB

The New Zealand Pony Clubs Association was started in 1946 by Dorothy Campbell, who was inspired by reading about the British Horse Society and Pony Clubs in the UK.Thinking about how much children and their ponies would benefit from some sort of organised activites, she established the Heretaunga Pony Club, the very first Pony Club in New Zealand.

In the last 60 years, the NZPCA has grown to encompass over 250 branches with over 8000 members. The NZPCA divides New Zealand into 16 "Areas", with each Area having a number of "District" Pony Clubs, and District Pony Clubs all having a number of "Branch" Pony Clubs. Rosedale Pony Club is a branch of the Waitemata District Pony Club, which is in turn belongs to the Waitemata/Rodney Area.

Objectives of the NZPCA

  • To encourage the formation of Pony Clubs in New Zealand and to regulate the general line of instruction in horsemanship and horsemastership.
  • To subscribe to, and become a member of, affiliate with, cooperate with and give donations and assistance to any other organisation or institution having aims and objectives similar to those of the Association.
  • To encourage young people to ride and enjoy all kinds of sport connected with horses and riding, to instill in them the proper care of their animals, and to offer them the opportunity of receiving instruction of higher class and on mor orthodox lines than many of them can obtain individually.
  • To promote and conduct rallies, gymkhanas, competitions and hunter trials for young people.
  • To promote the highest ideals of sportsmanship, citizenship and loyalty, thereby cultivating strength of character and self-discipline.
